Given Ferrari’s penchant for building high-performance supercars to commemorate important anniversaries, it came as little surprise when the manufacturer announced at the 2016 Cavalcade that it would produce 350 special-edition cars in 70 different liveries for its 70th anniversary. To be built in conjunction with Ferrari’s special Tailor Made division, these liveries would evoke important cars and drivers from the marque’s history, and were dubbed with nicknames such as “The Stirling,” “La Competizione,” and “The Schumacher.”
When the 70th Anniversary Edition was unveiled at the Paris Salon in October 2016, the livery of the car offered here was one of the four liveries previewed. The car, nicknamed “The Actor” by Ferrari, with its Marrone Scuro (Dark Brown) paint, was inspired by the 1963 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso once owned by Steve McQueen, and considered to be one of the most elegant Ferraris ever built. Each of the 70 liveries was replicated just five times across Ferrari’s five-model lineup, totaling 350 distinct cars.
This extremely rare F12 Berlinetta 70th Anniversary Edition benefits from a life of sparing use during its tenure with two collector owners. As each example of the edition was earmarked for a preferred customer, this F12 was sold directly to a noted Ferrari collector based in Los Angeles, as demonstrated by a copy of the original window sticker. The F12 was simultaneously issued a Ferrari Classiche Certification and Attestation for Vehicles with Special Equipment, documenting that the Berlinetta is original throughout and features factory- equipped matching-numbers components, including the distinctive elements of this anniversary model. Of the five different models that underwent 70th Anniversary finishing, the F12 Berlinetta is perhaps the most appropriate to wear this particular livery, as the car’s front-engine V-12 architecture and GT body style is closest to the original 250 GT Lusso. In addition to the unique commemorative color scheme, the Berlinetta is equipped with all of the F12 model’s advanced, high-performance equipment, including the remarkable 731 hp V-12 engine, an electromagnetic suspension, Formula 1-derived stability control systems, a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle, and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes. With its original owner, the Ferrari was kept in Southern California, seeing very limited use; in fact, when it was acquired in 2019 by its current owner, an avid and knowledgeable sports car enthusiast, it displayed only about 300 miles, and has covered fewer than 2,000 more in his care.
This singular F12 is accompanied by owner’s manuals, a car cover, and a battery charger, and is documented with the Ferrari Classiche Certification and Attestation. As the only F12 Berlinetta finished in the Marrone Scuro over natural leather livery of “The Actor,” this distinctive 70th Anniversary Edition offers serious marque collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a top-shelf commemorative model that should find a warm welcome at club meetings as well as high-profile Italian car gatherings.
